Bracco's kitchen doesn't have far to go to get fresh seafood: the venerable fish store Captain Ben's Fish Dock shares the premises--and the owners. It was Captain Ben Bracco, an immigrant from Trieste, who settled in Freeport and in 1929, bought a fishing boat. At first he sold fish directly from the boat. With the help of his son Jerry, he opened a proper fish store. Jerry and his sons, Michael, Jon and Robert, started the outdoor clam and oyster bar and back room. Among starters, Bracco's has a particularly good Manhattan clam chowder and is one of a very few Freeport restaurants to serve fried Ipswich clams. Also on offer are soft shell crabs, fried local calamari, grilled salmon, tuna, mahi-mahi, swordfish, shrimp or striped bass. Bracco's clam bake for two includes two 1¼ -lobsters, king crab legs, beer-battered shrimp, mussels and Little Neck clams, corn on the cob and fries. The outdoor deck is a great place to dine and have a drink.
