Counting Crows has always been about storytelling -- from "Mr. Jones" and everything after. For their seventh studio album "Somewhere Under Wonderland" (Capitol), though, the stories have grown wild and unruly, the kind that end with the teller saying, "What was I talking about again?" Starting with eight-minute-plus "Palisades Park," it's clear these are stories told for the experience rather than ones that, you know, have a point. How cool you are with that experience depends on how much you like Adam Duritz's vocals and how much you like the music of Big Star and Gram Parsons, because this is all really far from "Rain King."
