[tweetmeme]For a band that broke big back in 1988 with a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane,” it’s fitting that the Cowboy Junkies and their label Latent Recordings are treating fans to a monthly series of free downloads of interpretations of some of the band’s favorite songs.
This month’s installment — which Slicing Up Eyeballs is thrilled to present — is a cover of The Cure’s “Seventeen Seconds,” the brooding title track to Robert Smith and Co.’s sophomore album from 1980.
Follow the link below to download the song, in exchange for an email address, from Latent Recordings. The track originally was released on a bonus disc featuring five cover songs that came with some initial copies of the Cowboy Junkies’ 2004 album One Soul Now.
As you can hear, the Cowboy Junkies’ take on The Cure is appropriately moody, with Margo Timmins’ languid vocals punctuated by bursts of electric guitar from her brother Michael Timmins.
